Coming Out...

Today marks one year until the Olympic flame is lit in Beijing and the Chinese capital is gearing up for a celebration.

A year out from the Beijing Olympics, China's drive to stage the best Games ever looks on track as builders start to deliver the shiny new Beijing National Stadium, also known as the 'Bird's Nest', and prepa- rations continue with gold-medal efficiency.

China's leadership is attaching an extraordinary level of importance to the world's premier sports event, seeing it as something of a coming- out party to mark the rise of a new and influential global player!

Ordinary Chinese people may know that serious human rights and environmental problems could yet cloud the Games, but they are get- ting pretty excited about the prospect of the world coming to Beijing.

"We are all very confident of a great Olympics," one man said. "Wel- come you come to China, Beijing!"

A woman said: "I think a lot of foreigners only partially understand our country. The Olympics will give them a chance to better understand China."

With a year to go until 8:00pm on 08.08.2008, the experts are already looking to see if Beijing will be ready in time.

Australian architect John Pauline, who designed the Water Cube Olym- pic Pool and is an adviser to Beijing's Organising Committee, says the preparations are furious.

"There's one thing that the Chinese know how to do - and that's how to build things," he said.

"I have no doubt that all the sporting venues will be finished on time and in fact ahead of time to host all of the test events required for the Olympic Games."
