Ricky You BANG...

Pop singer and father to twin sons Ricky Martin declared publicly on his blog yesterday what he refused to discuss but was widely speculated for years: He is gay.

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Martin wrote in a blog posting on www.rickymartinmusic.com.

The Puerto Rican singer of hits such as Livin' la Vida Loca, has long been the subject of speculation but has never publicly commented about his sexuality.

The 38-year-old who became a father to twin sons via a surrogate in 2008 wrote in his blog post dated Mar 29: "This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with."

In his posting, he said a few months ago he had decided to write a memoir and doing so brought him closer to what he called "an amazing turning point in my life."

"Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating," he wrote.

Martin said he decided years ago to not share "my entire truth" with the world because people he loved warned him that "everything you've built will collapse."

"Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage," he wrote. "Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions."

"Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen five or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment."

"These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed."

The singer began his career with boy band Menudo and broke out as a solo artist and teen idol in the 1990s in Spanish-speaking countries.

He released his first, English-language album in 1999, the self-titled Ricky Martin, which saw two major hits Livin' la Vida Loca and She's All I Ever Had.

In 2002, Martin established the Ricky Martin Foundation to advocate for the well-being of children around the globe in critical areas such as social justice, education, health, and to seek the elimination of human trafficking especially children.

Ricky you BANG! I'm SO glad that you came out because this shows the world that you are a role model as a gay man to society in the positive way, this is what we gay people need in this society so the world can respect us more and accept us one day to get marry and adopt kids.

Finally! I'm glad he was able to finally come out in his own way and on his own terms. Would his career have suffered had he come out in the 90's? Likely. But he's only 38 with a bright, beautiful future ahead of him. Bravo, Ricky!
