Against The Grain With...

While Lady Gaga has The Haus of Gaga, designer/singer Geo Vaughn has The Sir Vaughn (SV) Lab, an edgy collection of custom made handcrafted accessories that combines with modern designs from a fresh, bold, creative mind.

PR8: Thanks for taking your precious time to do this interview. So, tell us in five words about The SV Lab.
Geo Vaughn: Thank you for having me! In just 5 words I'd have to say: Avant-Guarde-Wearable-Punk-Deliciousness.

Tell us in five words about Geo Vaughn, the man behind SV?
Hmm... Androgynous-Non-Conforming-Bizarre-Artist.

When I first saw your sunglasses collection, I'd just picture the image of Lady Gaga wearing them in a photo shoot or on stage. Has she got anything to do with it? If not, what is the inspiration behind SV?
For decades, club kid artists have challenged fashion, genders, and "normalcy", paving the way and setting the stage for pop stars like Lady Gaga. Her roll as a model/muse, providing attention grabbing press for the designers who create her outfits is important to them, but I'm far from impressed. While she plays dress up behind her body guards, and in front of cameras, REAL "fashionists" are braving the tough streets they live in to contribute REAL performance art. I wish her much continued success in her career as a mainstream pop star, but I feel she lacks originality. Bjork, Boy George, Grace Jones, David Bowie, and Klaus Nomi all did it first, and much better. Luckily for her, her fans are of a generation too young to appreciate that truth.

My inspiration for the SV 2010 collection came to me during a ride in the NYC subway. I could tell I was being looked at & possibly made fun of by the "normal" people on the train, so I decided I needed pro- tection for my mind and self esteem. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, so I figured: why not protect my soul, and make a statement of strength at the same time? In my mind, the spikes on my sunglasses shield me from the negative energy and ill wishes of the people who surround me. That is my inspiration.

Besides sunglasses, SV also does necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Which markets or group are you targeting?
We are also debuting a T-Shirt and hat collection at our very 1st fashion show, during this year's New York Fashion Week in September. Our target demographic is very simple: Individuals who prefer to live against the grain.

Which piece is your favourite in your entire collection?
I adore my "Rockstar Warrior" Sunglasses. Wearing them, I feel strong, different and sophisticated all at the same time.

What is something in your home that would make a stranger think you were gay?
The used, abused and greasy bottle of 'Gun Oil' lube on my night table.

What is something in your home that would make a stranger think you were straight ?
Absolutely nothing... My pad reeks of filthy homosexuality.

It's Pride month... anything in particular that you are most proud of?
I am proud of our LGBT youth. I look up to their bravery, their relentless demand of equality, and their outspokenness.

What's next for SV?
Expect some out of the box, jaw dropping pieces this September, I can assure you, you won't be disappointed.

And last but not least. Madonna. Yay or nay?
Yay! Yay! Yay! It was a pleasure speaking with you!
