Weekend...

On the 17 days to Christmas my true love send to me... A GAY MOVIE!

After missing the screening at London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival and Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, I finally managed to watch Weekend in the cinema tonight and I liked it.

Based in the city of Nottingham, UK, half-out lifeguard Russell (Tom Cullen) who hooks up with confident artist Glen (Chris New) on Friday night, only to discover that he's off to the US for good on Sunday evening. That gives them just one weekend to fall in love...

I really love the storyline and how issues about gay life is portrayed - the reality of meeting someone and thinking it's gonna last forever yet somehow it's gonna end. So real and true.

For one who is willing to be awake, alive, open and conscious the cinema can speak powerfully to our hearts, minds and souls...especially as we confront the hard realities of gay life. This is precisely why movies like "WEEKEND" are important for us, preparing us, or helping us process, the realities we have to deal with. Dostoyevsky once said, "True Love is a harsh and dreadful thing" ... and so it is! It’s really helpful to be ready when it takes a few rounds out of us and knocks us for a loop. While readiness doesn't diminish the pain it can keep us from disillusionment and disorientation...this definitely puts us ahead of the game and gets us beak on our feet with less bitterness and more resilience. It helps us understand that this is our own personal share in the pain of being human and imperfect...and living in a good but imperfect world. Thus the Wine of Wisdom about human nature and Gay life, when uncorked in cinema, can be very useful as a companion on our merry way to a good life.
